The COVID-19 pandemic has been a part of our daily lives since March 2020, but with about 2,76,110 new cases daily in the India and total death toll reaching 2,87,156, it remains as important as ever to stay vigilant and know how to protect yourself from coronavirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.” As the vaccines continue their roll out, here are the simple steps you can take to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect yourself and others.

Keep your hands clean - Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

Cough or sneeze in your bent elbow - not your hands - Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and throw the tissue away after use. If a tissue isn’t available, cough or sneeze into your elbow or sleeve, not your hands.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth- Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Limit social gatherings and practice social distancing - Since close person-to-person contact is the main source of transmission, social distancing remains a key way to mitigate spread. The CDC recommends maintaining a distance of approximately 6 feet from others in public places. This distance will help you avoid direct contact with respiratory droplets produced by coughing or sneezing.

If you are sick avoid close contact with other people - If possible, stay in a bedroom and use a bathroom separate from other people in the home. Use separate dishes, glasses, cups, and eating utensils and not share these with other household members. After use, run them through the dishwasher or wash with very hot soapy water. Use separate bedding and towels and not share these with other household members.

Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces - Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, computers, phones, keyboards, sinks, toilets, faucets and countertops.
